How to root your Motorola Cliq (Easy Way)
[How-To] Easy root for your Motorola Cliq
Rooting your Cliq while on the latest firmware is pretty darn easy. It can be done using an application you install on your phone, called z4root.
This application isn't available in the market, but thats a small hurdle and easy to overcome. All you need is a file browser, and your USB cable
File browser -- if you don't have one, I suggest Astro. There are many others, but Astro is very simple to use and I highly recommend it to those who might be new to the Android platform. Search for "Astro file manager" in the Android Market, and install it on your phone.
Then it's a few easy steps to root:
- On your computer, visit the z4root developer's thread at XDA-Developers. Read the first post in the thread carefully, and download the file that's attached. Also, notice the donation link if you feel like passing a few dollars to Ryan.
- Attach your phone to your computer, and just like you would drag a music file or picture to your phone, copy the z4root.apk file to your SD card. You can put it in any folder you like, just remember where you put it
- Unmount your SDcard from your computer, and unplug it.
- Go to menu>settings>applications. Make sure the "unknown sources" box is checked. Then go into the development settings, and make sure USB debugging is checked.
- Now open your file manager, and find the z4root.apk on your SD card. Press it, and choose Open App Manager (Astro gives this choice), then press the install button.
- Once installed, find the z4root app in your app drawer, and run it. Decide if you need a temporary root, or permanent. Select your choice, and go.
One last step you may want to do if you have chosen to permanently root is install busybox. Search the Android Market for "Busybox by Stephen (Stericson)" and install it. Busybox provides commands like copy and paste to the shell (the inner workings) of your OS.
How To Root Motorola Atrix
Q: What is Root?
A: Root, is super user access of your phones operating system. Think of your phone as a desktop computer. Right now you are logged on as a guest account. you can browse things and use applications but if you really want to change anything in your system you can't. What gaining root does is it gives you superuser permission to alter files that you could not before; again thinking of it as a computer you now have an Administrator account.
Q:Does rooting void my warranty?
A:Yes and no. If you walk into your carriers store with a phone that has Root access and they actually check it they have the right to say this phone was tampered with. But for those of you in the know, there are methods to unroot your phone first.
Q: Does rooting slow down my phone or drain battery.
A: NO, root is not an application or a running process, gaining root does not do anything but give you permissions that you normally would not have. Basically all you did during the rooting process was move files around. Its what you do with this new found permission that changes things. But as far as just rooting it does not make a difference.
Q: Will i lose any apps or data during the rooting process?
A: No, for the same reason as above. Rooting is basically just moving some files around. Of course there is always a risk of something happening in any process. I would say chances are of causing serious problems is slim to non. Its what you do with this new found permission that changes things. But as far as just rooting it does not make a difference.
Q: I lost root during an update, am i doomed?
A: No, what happend was the file containing your super user access was over written. Just re-attempt gaining root and you will be fine.
That what means root (*__*) Hope you guys understand ..

How To Root Motorola Atrix
I was having issues rooting my Atrix using my Macbook Pro. I have a WinXP install running under VirtualBox which failed using superoneclick.
So I hunted around until I found this on XDA:
[SCRIPT] aRoot for Atrix 4G [ root - init.d - sideloading - tethering ] - xda-developers
DesignGears (starter of thread above) has a script that you can try to run which roots, enables sideloading, and enables tethering. You should try it but I couldn't get it to work either (using VirtualBox) -- as is at least.
Basically, I modified what he did so that:
1) the adb.exe he has is replaced with the mac version of adb (downloaded from the 2.3 SDK)
2) modified the root and unroot scripts so that they are valid UNIX sh scripts instead of Windows /bat files.
3) removed the stuff from the root script that "cleaned up" the mess left by SuperOneClick. Since I never got s1c to run cleaning it up seemed silly.
I'm not sure you should trust me but attached is a zip you can extract to do the job.
A completely reasonable thing to do, instead of trusting a random dude on the internet, would be to
1) Download the mac android sdk from google (http://dl.google.com/android/android...10-mac_x86.zip) to snag a copy of adb you know is good
2) Download the original aRoot.7zip from the XDA thread
3) download my copy of the aRoot.zip
4) compare my aRoot.sh to the original aRoot.bat, verifying that nothing untoward is being done.
My atrix is now rooted! have fun!
How to install custom ROMs on your Nexus One
Disclaimer: While unlocking the bootloader/rooting of the Nexus One is pretty straightforward process, it will void your warranty and could have negative effects on the operation of your device. Please do the necessary research before you attempt the following procedure. Once the unlocking process is complete it can not be undone.
*Before you begin it is a wise idea to have a custom ROM you want to use already on your micro SD card (in the root directory - do not place the zip file in a folder) before you start any of the following.*
Unlocking the Bootloader
1.) Make sure your device is off. With your device connected to your computer enter fastboot mode by pressing the power button down while holding down the trackball.
2.) Now download and extract fastboot to your desktop.
3.) Windows Users: Enter bootloader mode by opening a command prompt and browse to the directory containing the fastboot files that you just extracted to your desktop, then type fastboot-windows oem unlock [Enter]
Mac Users: Enter bootloader mode by opening a terminal window and browse to the directory containing the fastboot files that you just extracted to your desktop. Assuming you extracted fastboot to your desktop, then Terminal commands to get to folder are as follows: cd ~/desktop/fastboot [Enter], then type ./fastboot-mac oemunlock [Enter]
Your bootloader is now unlocked.
Rooting your Nexus One
1.) Now we will gain root access to your device. Download this Superboot.zip file and extract it to a new folder on your desktop.
2.) Put your device back into fastboot mode as you did in step 1 of unlocking your bootloader.
3.) Windows Users: Double-click the install-superboot-windows.bat from within the new Superboot directory on your desktop.
Mac Users: While in the directory of 1.1-nexusone-superboot on your desktop type the following: chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh [Enter] Then type ./install-superboot-mac.sh [Enter]
Bingo, your Nexus One is now "rooted"...
Flashing the RA-Nexus Recovery Image [1.7.0] to your Nexus One
1.) First thing you need to do is download Amon_RA's latest recovery image. As of writing this it is v1.7.0.
2.) Now you need to place that file into the root of your 1.1-nexusone-superboot directory that should still be on your desktop from the steps above.
3.) Now with your device off, connect it to you computer.
4.) Boot your device into fastboot mode by holding the power button down while holding the volume rocker down. Then press the power button down to select fastboot usb selected.
5.) Windows users: Launch the Command Prompt and change directories to 1.1-nexusone-superboot folder. Type the following: fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-RA-nexus-v1.6.2.img and hit enter.
Mac users: Launch the Terminal and change your directory to 1.1-nexusone-superboot folder on your desktop. Type the following: ./fastboot-mac flash recovery recovery-RA-nexus-v1.6.2.img and hit enter.
The 1.6.2 recovery image is now loaded onto your Nexus One.
You are now ready to do a Nandroid Backup and install a custom ROM of your choice.
1.) With your device powered off hold down on the volume down rocker while pressing the power button. From there select "recovery".
2.) Once in recovery select backup/restore and choose Nand backup.
When that is completed you now have a backup image saved on your SD card in case you ever need to go back to the normal ROM.
3.) Now from the recovery menu select Wipe and then Wipe data/factory reset.
4.) Once the wipe is completed select Flash zip from sdcard to select the ROM you wish to install.
5.) Once the flashing process is completed simply reboot and enjoy your freshly flashed Nexus One!
